The role of a “critical friend” in the education system, especially in the professional development of a university teacher, is highly important. A critical friend is a partner who helps a teacher constructively evaluate professional activity, reflect, analyze personal experience, and improve competence. The article examines the psychological significance of a critical friend in developing the professional competence of university teachers. Based on the analysis of psychological and pedagogical literature and practical examples, its influence on career growth, teaching effectiveness, and professional experience is identified. The study used an action research approach, including questionnaires, test tasks, and self-assessment methods among young specialists and experienced teachers. The results showed that critical friendship increases professional confidence, reflective abilities, motivation, and the quality of pedagogical decision-making. In addition, this model reduces professional isolation and strengthens cooperation and support among colleagues. The findings confirm the importance of introducing the critical friendship model into the professional development system.
