Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the significance of the novel "Don Quixote" by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra in the literature of the Spanish Renaissance. The writing of the novel "Don Quixote" was a great event in the cultural life of Spain. In the content of the novel, we can see that Cervantes set the main goal of merciless criticism of romantic novels. Although "Don Quixote" may seem like a parody of medieval romantic novels, its content is much deeper. The work was a bitter and poisonous satire that mercilessly exposed the entire feudal society and its laws, customs, and traditions. Paul Lafargue highly appreciated Balzac and Cervantes among all novelists. And in the novel "Don Quixote" he saw a dying romantic epic. The Russian revolutionary democrat scientist V.G. Belinsky highly appreciated the famous author of the novel "Don Quixote", stating that "he dealt a decisive blow to the ideal development of the romantic novel and directed it in a realistic direction." From this period, interest in the work of Miguel de Cervantes in the literature of the Spanish Renaissance began to arise in Europe. At the same time, the article suggests that the historical and political events taking place in Spanish society at that time also had a great influence on the development of literature.
