Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the significance of the works of Erasmus Rotterdamsky, a prominent representative of Dutch literature of the Renaissance. The development of the genre of satire in the Dutch literature of the sixteenth century is considered on the basis of the satirical work of Erasmus "a compliment to stupidity". The skill of writing, the clarity of the realistic and democratic orientation of a talented writer is analyzed using specific examples. By differentiating the ideological orientation of his works, his characteristic features in the description of the characters, an attempt is made to assess the critical attitude of the writer in the literature of that period, which denies his characteristic features, hinders the folk spirit and realistic development in the works, is hostile to nature and human dignity, and does not recognize real life. The article also provides a scientific assessment of the influence of the works of Erasmus Rotterdamsky on medieval literature after him. In the article, the author assesses the creative heritage of the writer in connection with his influence on later European literature, especially on the development of the genre of satire. It is noted that the humanistic ideas of Erasmus Rotterdamsky have also remained relevant in the field of modern literary and cultural studies. On the basis of Renaissance literature, attempts are made to assess the relevance of the writer's humanistic ideas in modern literary criticism and cultural studies, the multifaceted essence of his creative heritage.
